and dismantles the social safety net in america. his opponent, former george w. bush surgeon general, richard carmona, is taking the opposite approach. >> it's reprehensible to think that the contract that we have with our seniors through medicare or social security is going to be cut. that doesn't make any sense. these are not entitlements. these are, in fact, investments. so i think that's the wrong thing to do. >> meanwhile, flake is trying to tie carmona to president obama. >> richard carmona was recruited by barack obama. jeff flake is supported by jon kyl and john mccain. carmona is for obama's health care law. flake's against obama's health care law. >> joining me now is dr. richard carmona, democratic candidate for senate in arizona and the former surgeon general of the united states. doctor, nice to meet you. great to have you here on "the ed show" tonight. i'll go right to it. health care is in your wheelhouse. you are the expert. he's going after you, your opponent's going after you on obama care. but you have been critical of health care in general on both sides. where do you stan

. >> in the '04 election, republican president george w. bush won the crucial state of ohio with 50.8% of the vote. and he won a second term in office. in certain parts of ohio, for certain groups of people who tend to lean democratic, voting in that election that year meant waiting if lines for ten hours or more. for voters in mostly african-american precincts voting was like an endurance event. in precincts used by college students, voting was an all day and into the night affair. the polls simply were not set up to accommodate everyone who wanted to vote. particularly democratic leaning constituencies. this time around, the national race, again, may all but depend on ohio and the same key democratic constituencies are again finding that trying to vote is a challenge. and i use the word challenge on purpose. as we reported earlier this month, the tea party group in ohio called the voter integrity project claims to have found 730,000 suspect names that it wants purged off the voter rolls in ohio. 730,000. we've now started to get a better sense of who this tea party group is challenging in terms

for president obama. lower even than the famously unpopular former president george w. bush right now. swing state voters say they do not think mitt romney cares about the needs of people like them. some of them are shockingly bad. look at the percentage of swing state voters who say mitt romney's policies will favor the middle class. in florida it's 8%. in ohio it's 9%, in pennsylvania it's 9%. whatever the romney campaign has done to gem themselves to this point, whether it's mr. romney's tax returns or lack there of or getting rich by laying off fact workers or that videotape that said half the country is lady bums and he doesn't care about them? in this reincarnation, thurston is mean. whaef it is that has done that is just killing him in the polls, every state. if the romney campaign does nothing else, they must, must, must make sure that nobody anywhere near mitt romney does that rich guy can't relate to people like me thing again. here's the romney campaign last night. >> both mitt and i have summer places up in new hampshire on lake winnipesaukee. a few summers ago was taking my chin

. this was the mid-1980s. the drug war was at its height. then vice president george bush headed up a task force to fight the problem. >> we have got to do better in interdicting it. >> reporter: in miami, cocaine is found hidden in commercial jets, flowers, even boxes of yams. the problem is, some aren't yams at all. rather, plaster casts painted and shaped like yams. inside, pure coke. stach houses and drug labs are routinely raided. that was a war on drugs. these days, it's not even a war of words. the white house doesn't haven't call it a war any longer, focusing more on prevention. and in this political season, the issue of illicit drugs rarely gets a mention on the campaign trail. when it does come up, president obama and mitt romney appear to be on the same page. >> that the president of the united states must make a priority of helping reduce demand in this country. >> the united states can focus on drug treatment and prevention. >> absolutely. i agree with that. >> reporter: if anyone should know, it's judge giselle pollack. she presides over drug court in broward county, florida. the i

's a former top official in the george w. bush administration. sitting on the federal appeals court in d.c. right now, he actually clerked for justice anthony kennedy back in the day. so perhaps that's a leg up. judge diane sykes is a popular conservative on the federal appeals court in milwaukee. so she is a choice too, especially, say, if justice ruth bader ginsburg, one of the liberals were to retire. sykes would probably be a leading candidate. and also have to mention paul clement. this is a really well known lawyer who actually served as the united states solicitor general. and argues a lot of big cases before the court including the health care case. i heard him speak here in washington, d.c. not too long ago. he's a very sharp guy. so a lot of choices there for mitt romney if he gets the job. and assuming somebody steps down, you know, they don't have to step down. >> i know. if you have three potential octogenarians, you have to think who might fit the bill. >>> the surviving d.c. sniper is speaking out in this rare interview from behind bars, maximum security prison in virginia

. deputy chief of staff for president george w. bush. a fox news contributor. good morning to you in washington. i want to analyze this from two fronts, the administration and how mitt romney does or does not capitalize on this. from the administration what explains the response that has gone out so far in the past two weeks? >> it is inexplicable. even the president recently on "the view" couple days ago continued to pin the murder on the ambassador on trailer for anti-islamic film when all the evidence points towards a terrorist attack, planned to occur on 9/11. i mean, look, the president of libya said so. the director of the national counterterrorism center said so. the intelligence community pointed in that direction. chairman of the house intelligence committee pointed in that direction. why the president contends to suggest this has something to do with offensive video and not a deliberate attempt to kill our u.s. ambassador is beyond me. there is lot to be gained by stepping up being the president. there is not a lot gained by look being like you're offering up excuse why

men are friends. joining us, matt slap, former white house political director in the george w. bush administration. good to see you. respond, first, to the criticism and the accusations here that this is a political stunt here. you have the president who is already talking to yet raw hnet why is romney on the phone with netanyahu? >> i think it is totally appropriate for netanyahu to talk to the opposition government leader here in this country this is something that is standard protocol. quite frankly i think mr. netanyahu knows that his relationship with america is incredibly important and i think it is clear he has concerns with the obama administration and how reliable a partner they're going to be on stopping iran from acquiring the material they need to make a nuclear weapon. and i think the relationship is close. it is important. i don't think we're overdra mat sizing what happened today. >> what was the phone call about? can you tell me? do you have a read in on it? >> i don't. it just happened literally moments ago. it could actually still be happening. and i think it would
